Former BCCI international umpire Subrata Banerjee passes away

Former international umpire, Subrata Banerjee, passed away on August 19 at the age of 71 in the city of his birth. Born on May 3rd 1945 in Kolkata, he stood in international matches for both men and women matches including in a Test for women.

He umpired for the first time in an international game on November 9, 1983 in an ODI between India and West Indies in Baroda. Son of former Test umpire, the late Sunil Banerjee, Subrata stood in 13 one-day internationals from 1983 to 1998 and 64 first-class games. He had officiated as reserve umpire in the Test match between India and England at Mohali in December 2001 as well as serving as a TV umpire in ODIs.

Besides these he also umpired across formats, age-groups and in women’s matches as well. Banerjee also served as a referee and was an ex BCCI Umpire Coach and ex BCCI Umpire’s educator.

His loss will be felt by the cricketing community.
